Jo Ann Barefoot explores how to create fair and inclusive consumer financial services through innovative ideas for industry and regulators
We can do better.
Good financial services are a root system on which people can build thriving lives. Too often, however, the system fails.
Why? After all, America has competitive financial markets, and we’ve also spent 40 years enacting ever-expanding consumer financial protection laws. And yet, products are still complicated, disclosures are confusing, and millions of people can’t find or afford what they need. Worse, millions have been severely harmed by their financial obligations.
I’ve worked with these issues since the early days of the consumer movement, as a regulator, Senate staffer, industry consultant, and volunteer. I think we’ve been doing it wrong.
Fortunately, we have a historic chance to do vastly better, mainly because technology innovation is suddenly transforming everything for consumers, providers, and regulators alike.
This website is a place to seed and cultivate ideas on how to foster more fair and inclusive consumer services.
